Woven Wall – A tactile guide through the corridor

What if a corridor could do more than simply connect rooms? What if it could encourage interaction, create moments of rest, and gently help residents find their way? Students from TU Delft’s Bucky Lab explored exactly this question with Woven Wall, transforming an overlooked hallway into a warm, interactive environment.

The design combines a sturdy handrail with a flexible curtain of terracotta beads, creating a modular wall element that invites touch while remaining functional. The woven surface offers residents a rich sensory experience through texture, colour, and movement, turning everyday circulation into a small moment of discovery. At the same time, the integrated handrail and lean-to-rest support provide comfort and confidence for people moving through the building.

Beyond its playful appearance, Woven Wall addresses several practical challenges at once. The modular system contributes to intuitive wayfinding, improves fire-safe corridor design by replacing improvised decorations with an integrated solution, and offers opportunities for social interaction and contemplation. The natural terracotta beads introduce warmth and identity while remaining durable and easy to maintain.

This project demonstrates how small architectural interventions can have a significant impact on wellbeing. By combining accessibility, orientation, sensory stimulation and social value in one elegant element, Woven Wall reimagines the corridor as an active part of everyday life rather than simply a passage from A to B.
