As Porto was considered as on the two main cultural capitals of Europe in 2001, the minister of culture and the city of Porto decided to initiate and prepare different urban and cultural intervention for the city. The architecture office OMA was invited to take part of in a restricted competition for a new concert hall to be placed in the historical center of Porto. OMA VS-A, architectes d.p.l.g / ingénierie de l’enveloppe had investigated new applications and materials to be used exclusively for Casa da Musica such as: the corrugated glass for the windows and the tiles used for rooms, canopy and wall finish in the Grand Audirorium. Casa da Musica characterized by its striking faceted exterior, which were the main lines for the interior spaces. The building contains 400mm thick faceted shell and two 1m thick walls, which considered as the building primary load carrying system. Arup and OMA investigated the concrete mix for the external facade to achieve the best performance. The corrugated glass facades were developed by the engineering office ABT.
