Unilever building has been built between 2007 till 2009 by Behnisch Architects and is considered as one of the first buildings, which had been built in Strandkai area. It is located directly on the North Elbe and on the west side of Hamburg Cruise Center HafenCity.
The Unilever building is considered to be one of the innovative designs, which takes into account the main principles of sustainable architecture, it developed as a six floor high building block, which is surrounding a glass covered atrium.
Due to strong wind in this area – up to 100 km per hour – the blinds required to be guarded, thus the facade had been wrapped by clear foil made of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). The protective membrane sits 1 to 2 meters from the inner facade and is supported by steel and aluminum frames. As the gap between the two membranes is open from the top and the bottom, fresh air is able to flow through the cavity and the operable windows.
