/// Project : Glasdach

Date: 1995

Location: Aachen, (abgebrochen)

Project manager: Ulrich Knaack, Michael Tümmers

Team members: S. Bialucha, R. Clasen, R. Kranzhoff, S. Mäder

Sponsored by: Flachglas.

Task / Concept:  A ruin consisted of masonry brick wall belongs to the Faculty of Architecture, which decided to be considered as an experimental building by adding new glass roof. The challenge was to use with care the existing building, thus the system should be modular to allow the glass roof to be part of the structure and transfer the loads to the existing supported system (Fig 01,02 Front, Side & Top view, overall view) .

Supporting Structure: The 3 * 2.50 m glass roof rested on the masonry wall with fifteen horizontal glass sheet. Ten cables under stress support the corner connections and supports the whole roof.

Three steel members supported by under stressed cables, Diagonal under stressed cables fixed to stabilize the whole roof against dead loads and wind loads.

Points load with 1,50 KN were applied, to assure a complete safety approach to the whole system (Fig 03,04,05 Structure section, Structure section, Top view) .

Construction: The top and bottom points connected with 9 mm steel plates and angles, which are joined with the glass panes by screws. To reduce the cost of making holes through the glass panels, the points of support connected by  16 mm bolts through the masonry wall.

A 2 mm fiber reinforced rubber sheet was placed as intermediate storage in between the glass and the steel connections to transfer the loads. MG screws were connected to help against the moment of force (Fig 06,07,08,09 Detail view, Connecting plate, Corner plate, Detail section) .

Glass: 12 mm tempered glass had been used, as laminated safety glass was not an option. Transferring  pressure loads through laminated safety glass sheets was not sufficient (Fig. 10,11 Isometric, Top view) .

Comments:  The realization of the project was just as prototype without correlation with the legal regulations, as the overhead glazing was consist of tempered glass which was not allowed, also laminated safety glass should be used instead.
