The Story of the Bucky Lab

In 2010, the Bucky Lab was founded at TU Delft as a hands-on learning environment where students could design, test and build at 1:1 scale. What started as an experimental prototyping course has, over the past 15 years, grown into a platform where engineering, material research and making culture come together in a unique educational format.

The book The Story of the Bucky Lab, published in 2019, captures and reflects on the first decade of this journey. It documents the mindset behind the Lab, the early prototypes, the students, mentors and partners who shaped it, and the belief that real understanding comes from thinking through making. In that sense, the publication stands as a milestone: a summary of the first ten years of experimentation, failure, iteration and success. The book is also a manual to copy the course.

Now, fifteen years after the start of the course, the Bucky Lab continues to evolve, expanding its network, its technical depth and its impact on façade innovation and architectural engineering education. The printed copies of the book are almost sold out, but the full publication remains available as a free online edition. For those who want to revisit the origins — or discover them for the first time — the digital version can be accessed here: The Story of the Bucky Lab
