Filming Facade Theory and Technology 2 in Italy
Earlier this autumn, Alessandra Luna Navarro and Marcel Bilow travelled through Italy to film new episodes for the MOOC “Facade Theory and Technology 2” — part of the OpenFace micro master program learning series. Between historic piazzas and modern research labs, we explored what façade performance really means — beyond aesthetics and compliance.
The course dives into performance-based façade design, helping learners understand façades as integrated systems of structure, energy, comfort, and cost. You’ll discover how to use KPIs, simulations, and lab tests, and learn when it’s time to move beyond the rulebook and trust design intelligence.
From load-bearing structures and fire or seismic behaviour to energy performance, daylight, and acoustic comfort, the modules connect all aspects of façade design into one clear framework — showing how real projects balance data, comfort, and sustainability.
Filming in Italy reminded us how centuries-old façades still perform beautifully without a single simulation — a perfect backdrop for discussing modern performance thinking.
