After the Matelab was set up in Delft, we first faced the task of unpacking everything that had been transported from Cambridge. Over the years, all sorts of materials and equipment had found their way into the two containers that formed the laboratory. Before we could start fresh, everything had to come out.

Because of some delays, the containers had been standing in the rain for quite a while. That made it even more important to clean and sort carefully – deciding what could be reused, what needed to go, and what would be replaced with new technology.
In line with Alessandra’s plans to update the lab’s systems, we also removed the old floor. This was not just any floor, but part of the original HVAC system: an air distribution channel where conditioned air enters through small ventilation holes in the floor and exits through central vents in the ceiling.
After a long but sunny day of clearing, cleaning, and sorting, the Matelab is now empty, fresh, and ready to be equipped with the next generation of façade testing technology. A new chapter for the lab begins!
