The Kurt Ruth Prize honors outstanding dissertations from the fields of architecture, civil and environmental engineering and chemistry.

In his dissertation, Dr. Steven R. Lorenzen from the ISMD, TU Darmstadt, developed an innovative process for monitoring and extending the service life of railroad bridges using “drive-by monitoring”. In this process trains are equipped with sensors that can take measurements each time they cross a bridge. This allows bridges to be monitored more efficiently and cost-effectively without the need for permanently installed technology. The process helps to detect dangerous resonance vibrations and avoid them, for example by making small speed adjustments, which increases the service life of bridges.

Professor Clemens Hübler (ISMD, TU Darmstadt) emphasizes the social relevance of the work in view of the poor condition of many bridges in Germany. He also highlights Dr. Lorenzen’s commitment beyond pure research and his potential for future contributions to structural monitoring.
