The path towards achieving closed-cycle management of materials resources has been gaining attention in the last decade, but has struggled to compete against new material options. Some of the reasons can be explained by the knowledge gap between the circular goals set up by public institutions and the actions AEC practitioners need to implement to fulfill them.

This research project considers the integration of digital innovations implemented in other sectors such as artificial intelligence in social media, robotic manufacturing in the car industry, and blockchain technology in financing to augment the skills of façade industry players towards connecting the end-of-life of building components from one building with the start-of-life of another. By following a research-through-de- sign approach that aims at generating knowledge through a design process, the research outcome consists of: a circular facade supply chain process (defabrication) framework (i): a decision tree for the evaluation of circular strategies implementation (ii); a data strategy reflecting on data requirements and roles along the lifecycle processes of façade components (iii); and a digital toolkit to support processing the data strategy (iv). These data-driven contributions for a Circular Built Environment (CBE) have the potential to make the reuse of building components more successful and widespread
